Although today the main battery manufacturing companies are headquartered in countries such as China, Japan or South Korea, for several years this market has been opening up to new horizons, especially for lithium-producing countries.
Given that in recent years the demand for metals for the manufacture of industrial batteries has increased rapidly worldwide, Mexico could have a promising future if it manages to establish production chains for industrial lithium batteries, which would have a positive impact on important areas such as energy storage.
Currently, it is projected that the country will have very fruitful lithium deposits in its territory in approximately one decade, which could make it one of the 10 countries with the largest reserves in the world.
According to estimates by the Mexican Geological Service (SGM), lithium deposits are located mainly in 18 states of the country: Chiapas, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Michoacán, Morelos, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tamaulipas, Veracruz and Zacatecas. The mines with the greatest exploration advances are located in the states of Jalisco, Puebla and Sonora.
However, the great benefits of domestic lithium extraction and the future of industrial battery production in Mexico with this metal are yet to be seen, due to the recent reform to the Mining Law, which establishes that lithium can only be extracted and commercialized by the Mexican government, thus closing the door to private and foreign investment in the market.
The main characteristics of the wide range of industrial batteries currently available are their greater durability and power, in addition to requiring little maintenance, which has become one of their great advantages.
The use of industrial batteries in Mexico and around the world is destined to areas such as energy storage, telephony, power transformer stations (such as solar and wind), emergency lighting, electric vehicle manufacturing, among others.
Moreover, industrial lithium batteries not only offer solutions for energy storage, but are also a great alternative for sustainable development. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the world could reach its sustainable energy goals by 2040, and batteries and storage sources are expected to play an important role in meeting this goal, with increasing capacity and lifetime.
On the way to a more sustainable energy model, the adoption of storage systems helps to avoid production losses and prevents interruptions in the operation of systems or equipment in different industrial sectors, thereby reducing operational risks, in addition to representing savings in long-term electricity consumption.
Quartux is an innovative company with years of experience in the design, installation and operation of energy storage systems with industrial lithium-ion batteries. As has already been seen, this type of battery is characterized by its efficiency and its great cost-benefit ratio, since it has a higher energy density and capacity than others.
Battery storage systems are still growing and are the great bet to make the energy sector much more efficient, increasingly accessible, since the cost of industrial lithium batteries is decreasing.
